Three bright grassy green peridots dance in waves of gold. This unisex bar brooch encapsulates the whimsy and freshness of the Edwardian Era, 1901 – 1910 when jewels were light and refreshing and the future was full of endless possibilities. Peridot was King Edward’s favourite gemstone, and it features prominently in jewels of this period. The peridots in this bar brooch are far brighter and more glittering than any I have encountered before, I thought for sure they were green garnets or perhaps green tourmaline but my gemologist assures me they are exceptionally high quality bright natural peridots. I’ve been slightly obsessed with peridot since learning that these gems are formed in the earths mantle, coming to the surface on a wave of lava. The Ancient Hawaiian’s believed that peridots were the tears of Pele, the goddess of volcanoes, fire and lightning. I had been considering converting this gem into a pendant, but as it’s such a vibrant unisex piece I thought I’d try to find it a new owner in its original form, first. Manufacture: Handmade in 15ct gold, the brooch is hallmarked 15c to the reverse, the gold fineness has been verified by XRF test. The three round old cut bright grassy green gemstones have been verified by an independent gemologist as natural peridot. They are all old cut with small high tables and bulging belly, free of visible inclusions and astonishingly bright and glittery. The central stone measures slightly larger than the side stones with a diameters of 5.66mm and 5.4mm respectively. The combined carat weight is approximately 3 carats. The three peridots are set in coronet settings along a knife edge rail, with a decorative swirl of gold dancing over and around the stones. The brooch fastens with a gilded steel pin and a c-clasp. There is a small golden loop at the centre, likely once attached to a safety chain. The brooch measures 49.36mm x 11.25mm Weighs 5.15 grams. Condition: Excellent antique condition. No faults to note.
