Description Where does Amethyst originate? Quartz is the most common mineral on earth and is a crystalline formation which comprises Silica (Silicon Dioxide). It forms at a variety of temperatures and can include a range of different trace minerals which can alter the colouration. Deposits of quartz are common in all types of rock and can be found distributed all over the world. Amethyst is found in many parts of the world and varies in colouration from a deep violet to a pale lavender. This is a result of trace deposits of iron within the crystal matrix. Some of the most deeply coloured violet Amethyst originates from Brazil, Uruguay and Mexico in South America. What are the myths and legends associated with Amethyst tumble stones? Amethyst has an ancient mythological lineage going back to antiquity. The name is taken from the Greek word ‘Amestusthus’ which translates as meaning ‘not intoxicated’ According to Greek mythology Dionysius the Greek God of wine was furious when a young maiden called ‘Amethyst’ rushed through his forest on her way to pray to the Goddess of Artemis rather than to him. Dionysius plotted his revenge by sending his tigers to tear the disrespectful maiden to pieces. As they leapt to attack her Amethyst prayed to the Goddess Artemis for protection but all Artemis could do was turn the innocent girl into a clear crystal pillar. Dionysius was consumed with guilt and regretted his hasty and cruel actions. He poured the juice of some of his grapes over the stone as an offering and demonstration of his sorrow. The crystal absorbed the purple grape juice and turned into the beautiful gemstone that we recognise as Amethyst. This legend also explains the mythical connection that Amethyst has as an anti-intoxicant. Greeks and Romans routinely used Amethyst to decorate goblets in the belief that this would prevent the drinker from intoxication when consuming the goblets contents. Priests wore amethyst because of this anti-intoxication association. In this case they believed it prevented religious intoxication. A protection against becoming too pious and disconnected from the reality of ordinary life. What are the healing properties of Amethyst? Amethyst is believed to be a powerful healing crystal.
