The Sar-e-Sang mine produces Lapis Lazuli and Afghanite can be found there in association with pyrite, calcite and Lazurite.   Small deposits of Afghanite have been found in Russia, Canada and Italy. However almost all the Afghanite still comes from the original site in Northern Afghanistan. What is Afghanite? Afghanite can easily be mistaken for either Lazulite or Sodalite which it can often be found closely associated with. Afghanite can have the vivid blue colouration but may be paler and in the case of the Italian deposit almost white or even yellow. The crystal structure is different to Lazulite and can present in a variety of formations. They can be wide or elongated prismatic crystals with partial or stepped pyramidal terminations. Sometimes Afghanite may be double terminated as bipyramidal crystals. It can form as distorted crystal groups, as tabular microcrystals that can be grainy, and encrusting. In this case you can clearly see the hexagonal crystal forms, calcite, marble and some muscovite and pyrite crystal forms as well. It is often found in combination with Calcite, white marble, pyrite, muscovite.
